Why is 'thinking' so hard?

Ever wondered why it's so hard to think? Here's something to think about!

A study estimated that assuming 16 waking hours, a person might have around 6,240 thoughts per day. Other sources suggest that the average person has between 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day, roughly 35 to 48 thoughts per minute. So many thoughts, but there's only so much we can do.

Thinking can be challenging for various reasons, both inherent to our brains and surrounding our mental environment.

Here are some key factors:

Complexity of the Brain:

  • Energy Cost: Thinking is a metabolically expensive process, demanding a significant portion of our brain's energy resources. This can lead to fatigue and hinder sustained, intensive thinking.

  • Multiple Cognitions: Our brains juggle an array of functions simultaneously, like perception, memory, emotion, and physical response. This multitasking can dilute focus and impede deep, concentrated thinking.

  • Information Overload: We're bombarded with information in the modern world, making it difficult to filter, prioritize, and process effectively. This overload can overwhelm cognitive resources and lead to confusion and mental fatigue.

Mental Challenges:

  • Overthinking: Dwelling on thoughts excessively can create mental loops, and anxiety, and hinder productive problem-solving.

  • Bias and Heuristics: Our brains rely on shortcuts and biases to make quick decisions, but these can lead to errors and hinder objective, fair thinking.

  • Lack of Focus: Distractions, both internal and external, can fragment our attention and impede sustained, meaningful thought.

Environmental Factors:

  • Stress and Anxiety: These mental states can disrupt cognitive function, making it harder to think clearly and creatively.

  • Sleep Deprivation: When sleep-deprived, our brains struggle to process information efficiently, leading to poor focus, memory, and decision-making.

  • Lack of Stimuli: Monotonous environments can stifle creativity and critical thinking, making it harder to engage in deep or productive thought.

Workplace, media, and technology play a huge role in directing our lives.

Work influences our thinking, directing us toward achieving organizational goals. the media influences our thoughts with various text and audio-visual content. Technology influences our thinking by influencing our habits, separating us from what we need to do, and making us do what's convenient.

Thinking is harder than ever in the age of digital and artificial intelligence. All the more reasons for individuals to think deeper about what they can realistically contribute. Complement their thinking with the correct use of media and technology.

Our thoughts are a collection of words that have the power to lift us or burden us. How to think? I am reminded of the verse in Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
